Did you know that as an adult, 1/3rd of your waking life is spent working? Wow! That’s a huge number. And still many people wallow & spend their time on jobs they don’t love. Fortunately for me, I found a job that I love early in my career. After graduating from an average MBA college, I joined a start up in Noida and started my work life. After a 10 months stint there that taught me a lot of things, I moved to a SEO agency. It is important to mention here that though I had very little experience before my stint at SoLoMo Media, it was crucial because it helped me identify things that I didn’t want or like for my professional life. For example, after working in an SEO agency, I understood very clearly how important is a company’s culture and that even though it sounds like an intangible valuable, it impacted my performance directly or indirectly. It took me little time to realise that I need to move to a place with better opportunities, culture and bosses! And then, on a bitterly cold December evening, I found myself interviewing for a role at SoLoMo Media.
Fast forward 15 days and yep that’s how quickly I joined them. And heck, what a journey it has been! I have tasted success, failure, happiness, jealousy, fright, joy and what not! So here’s some of the important things that I picked up in my journey:
AMBITION IS THE MOTHER OF ALL INVENTIONS
I start with this because hey, look at me in the picture! I’m the middlemost girl in the picture. Doesn’t look like I was going anywhere right? This picture was taken shortly after I joined SoLoMo, outside a small restaurant in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad where our first & second office was based. But I wanted more from work, more from my profession and definitely more from myself. I was not happy with what I was and I wanted to learn and improve. It started with this deep desire to be someone, to do something worthwhile.
RAISE YOUR HAND & SAY I WILL!
It is not enough to do what you were hired to do. It will never be enough, not today, not ever. You want to know why? Because it is not enough to grow at that pace. If you want more, you gotta give more. So raise your hand more often and say I will do it. Most things only require you to google stuff, take some help from people who might have done something similar and then figuring it out from there on. Sure, you mess up sometimes, but that’s a part of it all. And it’s super exciting! Roughly translating, it means more work, more responsibilities, sometimes panic attacks and a whole lot of pressure but hey it’s all worth it. Oh! I forgot to mention some nightmares too!
COLLABORATION IS COOL, BUT BUILD YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE
At SoLoMo Media, we have a culture of collaboration and it is supported by how we sit and talk with each other. We sit on a long table and work together. We often speak to each other about our problems, difficulties and challenges. But there’s a catch here, it’s cool to take help from others when you are stuck, but I have learnt that it is always better if you figure out it yourself. You remember it longer, you research about it and learn a lot more than you needed to and you can help others too!
DON’T BE CAGED BY HIERARCHY. SAY YOUR MIND
Sometimes you are right, sometimes you are wrong, but at least, you presented your viewpoints. Don’t stand there accepting orders, but instead, question, ask and say your thoughts. Not only does it helps you make an impression, but also makes you think a little deeper about a topic. It requires you to take some time out and think about a problem. With that careful thought spent on a problem comes tentative solutions and outcomes. Won’t that help you score some brownie points? It sure worked for me.
You read it right. I found many people here who were and are worthy of being jealous of. Some of them were more organized, some were so creative, while others still, knew how to manage people. I am lucky to be working at an organization where I can learn and pick up new things just by looking at people! Does this mean I am accepting they are better than me? At this moment, yes! But it’s not going to remain that way for long. Because they may be better than me in some aspects today, but it will not necessarily be true in some months. Believe me, there’s a different kind of fun to be good at something about which you barely knew some months back. It’s an awesome feeling, one I recommend everybody to have.
FIND A CRAZY BOSS WHO BELIEVES IN YOUR POTENTIAL
You might have read at a lot of places that it is important to work for a good boss early on in your lives. There couldn’t be anything closer to the truth than this. A good boss will give direction to the whole of your career. He/She will encourage you to learn more, do more and be more. He will trust you even before you will trust yourself and let you take it from there. I found one here at SoLoMo and I was smart enough to stay. Thank You Rohit Awasthi for believing in me.
MAKE ALLIES, YOU WILL NEED THEM
1/3rd of your life spent ‘JUST’ working will take you nowhere! Make friends, enjoy the light moments, be genuinely concerned about people. The experience changes you in ways that are indescribable. In my 2 years at SoLoMo Media, if you will ask me what I am most proud of, it would probably be about playing a teenie-meenie role in professional lives of the people here. And here’s my team in the festive spirit.
